Buzz Burgess is an artist from Mobile, Alabama, the son of a World War II veteran, is mainly self taught and displayed his talent at a very early age, doing his first painting at age 9. Buzz won his first art competition by the age of 10 while attending Kate Shepard Elementary School in Mobile, Alabama. Buzz's Family moved to Kansas City, Ks. that same year, when his father was transfered to nearby Richards Gabour Air Force Base. Buzz was a scholastic magazine Gold Key scholarship winner in the Kansas State Art Competition at the age of 17 and received a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute, where he attended, while still in high school. Buzz also excelled in the classroom and on the sports field while in high school, graduating in the top 10% of his class, lettering in two sports and receiving the Explorer Post Athletic Award of Excellence for the Kansas City Area. Buzz was also a Huddle Leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athlete's while in High School. Upon graduation from Shawnee Mission West High School, he received a Miller Art Merit Scholarship. He studied Art at Kansas State University and Then the University of South Alabama, worked part time and competed as a sprinter on the University’s track team. He was a member of the South Alabama School record 4x100 meter relay team. While in college, Buzz decided not to pursue a major in Fine Arts, having many other varied interests, One such interest led him to pursue a degree in Operations Management, but continued taking several Art classes as time allowed.
Buzz graduated with honors from the University of South Alabama with a BS in Operations Systems Management and enough hours for a Minor in Fine Arts. After Graduation, Buzz began a career in the manufacturing and computer support fields and business contract negotiations. However, most spare moments are spent creating, painting, learning and developing his own artistic style. Buzz has worked in both 2D and 3D mediums since his childhood, including watercolors, pencil, ink, pastels, acrylics, oils, wood, and clay ceramics. Buzz is mainly known for his colorful watercolor paintings, his style ranges from realism to impressionism. His subject matter ranges from seascapes, landscapes, jazz, sports, and vibrant character studies that depict everyday life. Buzz is currently a self-published artist and is the owner of Burgess Art Studio, Inc. –which is the publishing and distribution company for limited edition prints of his work.
